This weekend, an article on Bloomberg came out confirming that the Colonial Pipeline attack came as a result of a compromised VPN password.
“The hack that took down the largest fuel pipeline in the U.S. and led to shortages across the East Coast was the result of a single compromised password.”
The account was no longer in use but still accessible. A week later, a demand for ransom was made, and for the first time in 57 years the Colonial pipeline system had shut down. The whole nation felt it.
How many unused user accounts does your network have? What impact would such an attack have on your company? What impact would it have on your clients or customers?
Even if the answer is “none,” it’s not just unused accounts, but even active accounts can be compromised. One of the biggest banks in America has their employees change their passwords several times a day, yet they still get hacked.
Most VPNs are still using outdated technology that allows for compromises such as this. It doesn’t have to be like this. It’s time for a revolution in cybersecurity. Hackers keep getting more advanced, it’s time your network security did too.
BlastWave’s solution would have taken away this opportunity from the attackers in the first place. Our solution, BlastShield prevents credential theft, phishing attacks, and replay attack - making it nearly impossible for old credentials to be used as an entry point. In addition, BlastShield binds user visibility and access privilege - eliminating the ability for malware or ransomware to move laterally across your network.
Authentication in a BlastShield network is easy, yet highly secure. You can see for yourself in this video:
